The Soldier’s Tale

Review

Presented by C’mon productions, The Soldier’s Tale is a classic take on a famous piece written by Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. The story centres around the soldier Joseph, his girlfriend and their encounters with the Devil. Actor Oscar Derkx gave an impressive performance as Joseph while Camille Ensminger was a superb dancer as Joseph’s girlfriend. Accompanying them was a convincing narrator in Davina Stewart, who described all of the action in a convincing fashion. The dialogue of the piece itself was interesting and almost had a Dr. Seuss style-rhyming scheme. Leading the orchestral section of the show was the Chief Conductor of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra Alexander Prior. Thanks to his conducting of the seven musicians playing the classical pieces from Stravinsky, the show seemed to flow quite flawlessly. For fans of classical theatrical work, this show should delight. – Pierre Royal
