Unscriptured

Review

Unscriptured is an incredibly clever twist on the improv tradition, taking audience cues to form a completely new religion on the spot. Right off the bat, the newly formed congregation is asked to put on name tags—I'm certain we're about to join some kind of cult of spontaneity. But Travis, our church leader, is quick witted and makes otherwise awkward audience participation a joy, leading improvised songs, prayers, and even an impromptu baptism. It's utter silly, nonsense fun, revitalizing the collective spiritual experience through goofy ad libbing. After all, why shouldn’t every Sunday Mass begin with an enthusiastic chant of “Church! Church! Church! Church!”? It's a little unorthodox, bringing irreverence to religion, but at a time where religion divides us now more than ever, Unscriptured offers a moment to forget the renewed bond of church and state and poke fun at the very framework of the traditional church rituals people of the faith fall into without question.
