Vern’s Diary in Concert

An orchestral jazz-lounge feel journey through the tragedy and conflict of the Second World War. Complete with stand-up bass, spoken-word poetry, and old school microphones. Fly with the crew of a bomber over enemy territory in the middle of an air strike, as bad turns to worse when the gestapo capture and hold Vern hostage. Feel his relief to be Canadian and appreciate the harsh reality some countries went though against their will. Has the political stance on war really changed? Has the world walked forward, remembering what we banded together to stop? Let's all hope so, as we add a second story onto the end of an already heart-dropping close call with war. A musically dense big band experience that calls its audience to protect the peace our world has fought so hard for. Relevant to the times and experiential to the ears. Reviewed by Talis Hardy.

Very interesting use of actual documents from Vern, a Canadian member of the RAF, bomber crew. While excerpts from Vern’s journal were projected for the audience to see, the actors and musicians provided the story through music and songs. The music for this show was fantastic. The original score was true to the era, with lyrics taken from Vern’s original diary entries.
