You Fucking Earned It!

Review

You Fucking Earned It is a self-described satirical takedown of Western economic Imperialism, but without much of substance to say, it’s neither funny or smart enough to merit a recommendation. That’s unfortunate, because both Sabrina Wenske and Cara McClendon have a strong command of dramatic theory, and their physicality is enough to drag a smattering of laughs out of the crowd. While dressed as grotesque, jester-like creatures the chuckles never last. Even as a participatory experiment in fringe theatre awkwardness, it doesn't really go far enough to push the envelope for experienced fringers. As an intelligent takedown of the socio-economic realities of our world, it's not smart enough to entertain experienced thinkers. What’s more, its vulgarity seems out of place; it’s both unfunny and lacking intent, which is a poor pairing for the philosophical questions that are almost asked during the show’s 60-minute run. The production touches on topics like ethical pitfalls in the banana industry, the bravado of third-world documentary reporting by publications like Vice, and the hypocrisy of the actions some Westerners take to address distant concerns. However, comprised of a whole lot of winking followed by utterly unsuccessful nudging, You Fucking Earned It definitely doesn't succeed in earning your time. Reviewed by Kevin Pennyfeather.

Bouffon clowns are the premium jesters of society, the non-relatable clowns you hate because they make you see your mistakes. ‘You Fucking Earned It’ is a brilliant lesson in conscious selfishness. Naked Bouffon Empire Co punches every first world problem you have in the stomach, making you regurgitate a heart-sized turd so you can reflect on where you last took a shit and who it landed on. Go see it; you deserve it.

I saw You Fucking Earned It! in San Francisco as one of two shows delving into the mechanics of First World Problems. I loved the participation aspect of the show, and I felt like Sabrina and Cara used the audience adroitly as a third performer. Throughout, I was seeing what I knew was happening in the nouveau riche Bay area (and probably a lot of the more advanced cities of the world), but they articulated and connected things in a way I wasn’t expecting. I wish I could see it in Edmonton!

I was blown away by this show. it was: Subversive. Skillful. Haunting. Hilarious. I would see it again. Very intelligent, incisive, challenging. They know their buffon, the disturbing art of grotesque clownery!!

No theater has a fourth wall strong enough to protect you from these talented but twisted performers. These two ‘ladies’ are an assault on the senses and an attack on complacency disguised and disfigured to seem like entertainment.

You Fucking Earned It is face-melting good. If you have any ounce of unchecked privilege, they will pull it out of you and have you laughing the whole time. Highly recommended.

In “You Fucking Earned It”, Sabrina Wenske and Cara McClendon use the art of Bouffon to mock modern Western culture. You will cringe as they highlight your complicity in evils such as imperialism and entitlement. You will also laugh your ass off. The ability to evoke both responses at once is one of the great strengths of Bouffon.

McClendon and Wenske use their warped, gnomish Bouffon bodies to great effect, sometimes building on the shapes and other times letting them contrast absurdly with the characters they depict. It’s a very physical performance, and while related to clowning, the difference both in the visual aesthetic and in the more confrontational relationship with the audience make the experience really stand out. Go see it!

Not only was this performance highly entertaining but also spot on. The performance really made me think about our culture and the sense of entitlement that we collectively often seem to embody in a wealthy, majority world country. But the performance was also hilarious and artfully executed.

This is the exact experience I want from the Fringe. It was unsettling, mesmerizing, funny and savage. Every moment was theatrically satisfying – the laughs, the cringes, the slight fear when the performers (often) ran into the audience…I would recommend this to anyone. You even get to swear sing.

This reviewer needs a history lesson in Bouffon. Because this show was perfect Bouffon artistry.

I’m pretty sure that these gals saw your misguided 1.5 stars and blew your score out of their deliberately oversized arses.

This was my favourite show in the Fringe.

“You Fucking Earned It” was like watching two distorted muppets driving on the wrong side of the freeway at top speed; cackling joyfully, uncovering the ugly reality of America, and challenging the audience to wake up and turn the car around. The show was unique, thoughtful, and expertly delivered by Naked Empire.
